I heard on the radio the other week that Kerry (who is Catholic of course) has a Jewish younger brother who converted to that religion more than twenty years ago. Reading Muhlenberg’s comment, one would assume it’s Cameron.

While the concept of “Tikkun Olam” is antithetical to my beliefs, I do support the inclusion of religious speech in political debate. However, it would be nice, considering the issue the Kerry campaign has made of Bush’s faith, there be some equity. Had J eb Bush said the “aim” of the Bush/Cheney campaign is to promote Christian dogma, we would never have heard the end of it.

Twenty-one years ago when I married Kathy Weinman, I became a Jew by choice mainly for the sake of our children. I wanted to be a full-fledged particip ant in raising them in the Jewish faith.
And 21 years later, Kathy and I have two daughters, one a freshman in high school, the other a freshman in college. As proud as I will be to see my brother John Kerry stand up on the Capitol steps to take the oath of office as president, it just may equal the pride of seeing each of my daughters stand up on the bima to read from Torah as a Bat Mitzvah.
Once again I am acting mainly for the sake of my children as I do all I can to elect my brother John as preside nt.
The election this Tuesday is crucial to the world they will inherit – whether they will have freedom of choice as women, what kinds of jobs will be open to them as they enter the workplace, whether they will have health care and Social Security avai lable as they grow older, what burdens they may face as taxpayers to shoulder our debts, whether they will be free from fear or be called on to serve with other young Americans to fight in a foreign land.
This campaign has been a rich journey. Over the past year, I have met with Jewish leaders and citizens across America and in Israel. I have listened to the concerns of American Jews in countless meeting rooms, living rooms, and synagogues. I have traveled to Israel and met with Prime Minister Sharon a nd former Israeli prime ministers, as well as with Israeli generals responsible for their country’s security. I have met with Orthodox leaders at home and seen the devoted community service of Hatzalah ambulance volunteers.
I have held the original car bon copies of concentration camp records kept by courageous inmates, listing the great aunt and great uncle I had never known existed.
All this has strengthened my abiding belief in America’s commitment to Israel. I know that my brother John shares thi s belief. This is reflected in his 20-year record of unwavering support and in his continuing vocal support throughout this campaign.
And I have seen it in his eyes and heard in his voice as he has spoken to me of his many trips to Israel and the Middl e East, going back to describing his trip to Masada 18 years ago, watching the sun set and listening to the echoes of “Am Yisrael Chai” across the valley.
My brother believes that in uncertain times like these we must reaffirm and, indeed, strengthen o ur special relationship with Israel, our most steadfast friend and ally. Israel’s cause must be America’s cause. On this, he will never waver. John will be a president who is strong in his support for Israel AND in his support for other values that are vi tal to our community. These values are at stake in this election.
That is especially true with the next president appointing as many as four Supreme Court justices. And those appointments will determine the outcome of fundamental issues that will shape our history for decades. We must not let this history be shaped by the radical right that has dictated Republican appointments.
John will appoint judges who protect privacy and choice, and respect the constitutional separation between church and state and protection of religious freedom that has enabled Jews to thrive in America.
From the time he came back from Vietnam, John has always spoken truth to power – as he did recently when Saudi Prince Abdullah blamed terrorism in his country on Zionism (and the Bush Administration was shockingly silent) and as he did face-to-face with Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak on his most recent trip to the Middle East. He will speak out against bigotry of all kinds, whether it’s anti-Semitism in Europe or racism a nd discrimination at home.
And John will carry out the other work needed at home – from making health care available and affordable through our existing system, to carrying out the promise of No Child Left Behind, to unleashing scientific research and the American spirit of pioneering by pushing back the boundaries of stem cell research to cure diseases and of new energy sources to liberate us from dependence on Saudi Arabia and build the next economic boom.
This administration is making Israel and America less safe by taking its eye off the real threats in Iran and elsewhere, unleashing chaos in Iraq, and breeding new terrorism and hatred that gets directed at Israel and Jews most of all.
My brother will be a president who goes after the real terrorists with smart intelligence, who challenges the Saudis, Iranians and Syrians, and who commands respect and credibility from the world. John will be a stronger friend to Israel and make America safer.
During high holy day services, it occurred to me that “tikkun olam” is a rough translation for the aim of the John Kerry/John Edwards campaign: to make America stronger at home and respected in the world.
We have an enormous job of tikkun olam ahead to regain all that has been squandered over the last three years. I hope you will help make that work possible by voting for my brother John Kerry for president – not for my sake, but for the sake of my daughters and the world their generation will inherit.

Regarding terrorists, Jerry Falwell wants Bush to “blow them all away in the name of the Lord.”
Fortunately, a number of his brethren are happy to set him straight, as the story points out. Still, this is the sort of rhetoric Falwell and Robertson use all the time, and only once in a while get called on it, when they cross some line (one which I find seems rather arbitrarily drawn)… If anyone wonders why I left evangelicalism, it’s because of this sort of thing – and all the stuff I’ve mentioned in this forum…

Not comparable. Israel holds together because of real and perceived enemies. Absent those enemies, we would see what we saw in the Soviet Union when the ruling Trotsky/Zinoviev faction was exterminated by the Kaganovich/Yagoda faction.
America does have real and perceived enemies as well of course. But having them is not a intregal part of what it is to be American.
