Does this Union have a future?

Is the EU a threat or a fantasy? One sometimes wonders: A pair of meteors head for Brussels, both called Fraud. It’s not clear from the article how big the problem of corruption is at present, but it’s structural and seems likely to get far worse with the expansion of the EU to Eastern Europe. The reason is that the EU isn’t really an object of loyalty, it’s difficult to make its institutions responsible to anyone in particular, and the people involved don’t have many common standards. If all that’s so, what will induce those involved to obey the law when it’s in their own interest to do otherwise?
