Times Square entertainment

July 1, 2002 by James Kalb

It’s interesting those guys are still there: The Children of Israel. I don’t often go near Times Square these days, and it’s been couple of years since I’ve seen them, but they really are as bad as Mr. Goldblatt says.

Death of the West redux

July 1, 2002 by James Kalb

In the most basic ways, “Western Civilization” no longer works. Some illustrations: More Englishwomen staying childless to advance their careers, while Sweden looks for social policies to boost the birthrate while keeping female labor fully and equally available as an economic resource. The policies just don’t work—after a brief rise Sweden’s birthrate is back in … More ...

Noonan on good and bad patriotism

June 29, 2002 by James Kalb

In a very idle moment (I was looking at an interactive map showing blogs located near my subway stop) I ran into the following horrible quote from Peggy Noonan:

…[T]he essence of American patriotism is a felt and spoken love for and fidelity to the ideas and ideals our country represents and was invented

Extended family benefits

June 28, 2002 by James Kalb

The president signs the Michal Judge Act, which has the effect of paying federal death benefits to “partners” of unmarried policemen and firemen, while New York City considers giving effect to homosexual unions registered in Vermont and California. It’s “simply the right thing to do,” says the City Council speaker.

The Judge Act can … More ...

Catholic scandals

June 27, 2002 by James Kalb

Worth noting: LifeSite Canada has a comprehensive collection of articles on the current clerical homosexuality scandals. Their front page, by the way, has a good listing of current news items relating to their areas of concern, including PC suppression of traditionalists in Canada.

US global micromanagement

June 26, 2002 by James Kalb

It’s hard at this distance to figure out just who did what and how bad it was, but that’s the point: Albanian terrorists armed by the West to fight in Kosovo are destroying Macedonia. We bombed Serbia for 78 days and nights because we were outraged by a civil war in which more than … More ...

What is the place of freedom?

June 26, 2002 by James Kalb

What is the proper place for freedom? Certainly the liberal view that freedom is a self-contained final standard for politics is wrong, since freedom is always freedom to do or be something. As such it must be understood by reference to some further good. Freedom is primarily freedom to acquire or achieve something good. … More ...
