Errata variorum

Keeping abreast of the times:

  • It seems the ban on Vlaams Blok didn’t become final quite fast enough. The right-wing party came in second in the recent EU vote, beating the party of Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt (who is most likely the next EU president). In the aftermath: the other parties are fussing about whether to talk with them, and the state-run Flemish broadcaster is in hot water with academics and other journalists for failure to take a strong enough anti-VB line. Nothing like the marketplace of ideas!
  • Meanwhile, on a sort of combined Abp of C-“contemporary Bible scholarship” front, it appears that the translators of the “wicked” Bible (1631), which left the “not” out of the 7th commandment, were ahead of their times. A new translation of the Bible, with an enthusiastic foreword by Druid Rowan himself, does away with Saint Paul’s strictures against homosexuality and his comment that “It is good for a man not to touch a woman,” and replaces them with “My advice is for everyone to have a regular partner. Husbands and wives should strive to meet each other’s a sexual needs … It’s not good to refuse a partner.” The translation also yanks Revelation and sticks in the “Gospel of Thomas” instead. If you scroll through the FreeRepublic.com thread you’ll find the whole London Times article. The response of the people who put out the new translation is here.

I cannot say enough how much satisfaction—intense joy, even—this brings me! Great news! (Thanks to Jim Kalb for reporting it!) I know both the Flemish people and the Walloons quite well (as I do also the Eastern Canton Belgian Germans). All I can say is that in this disagreement the Flemings are right and the Walloons wrong. Whether or not the two nationalities will ever get over this serious rift and preserve Belgium intact, I don’t know. Meanwhile … GO, FLEMINGS!
